Aircraft Fuel Tank Inerting

For years, nitrogen has been used to inert the headspace in combat aircraft fuel tanks. In 1996, the crash of TWA flight 800 brought the issue of explosive fuel vapors to the forefront for commercial aviation as well. Early on in the development of the OBIGGS (On-Board Inert Gas Generation System), On Site Gas engineers worked with a number of companies, and the FAA, to determine the best method for inerting the empty tanks of commercial aircraft. Air-Driven Tools / Machinery

When air is compressed, the moisture and impurities within it become concentrated. A refrigerated air drier can lower the dew point from 70-80°F to as low as 40° F. But even at a 40° dew point, there is enough moisture to promote rust and corrosion in air-driven tools and machinery. What's the answer? Drier, cleaner gas from an N2 generator. Nitrogen produced with an input dryness of 40° F will have a dew point of as low as -40°F! This very dry, very pure N2 will double or even triple the life expectancy of air lines, tools, and machine parts.

Algae and Sparging

A few years ago our founder, Frank Hursey, made a fascinating discovery: When nitrogen is sparged, or bubbled, into liquids, the oxygen level is reduced to a point at which most biologics and all botanicals cannot survive. We now have the patent on this process.

Photo labs, food-grade oil producers, packagers, pharmaceutical plants, chemical companies, HVAC cooling water towers, and many others now bubble 97-99% purity nitrogen into chemical baths at low pressure to prevent bacteria and algae growth. Even if the surface of the water is open to ambient air, sparging N2 kills algae. N2 is far less corrosive than ozone, and can be easily retrofitted to any recirculation or filtration system. We have worked on bulk carriers, oil tankers and ballast-water systems to develop N2 and hybrid systems that meet almost any sparging application. We can also design a system that will custom size N2 bubbles to boost cost-effectiveness.

Bacteria Elimination

Like most living things, bacteria need oxygen to survive. If oxygen is removed from a product, bacteria cannot live and grow. No bacteria means no mold or mildew. No food spoilage. Organics or chemicals do not become infected. On Site Gas nitrogen systems are used to sparge and blanket liquid, powder and gaseous products every day. Since nitrogen is required 24/7 to prevent growth, an N2 generation system works best. Purity requirements to kill or prevent bacteria are relatively low (95%).

Blanketing for Adhesive Curing

Blanketing or purging is an ideal application for generated non-cryo nitrogen. Nitrogen purges furnaces of oxygen where the adhesive compound is applied to various tape materials, reducing the incidence of poor adhesive bonds, or hazardous atmospheres due to chemicals used for the bonding process.

Brazing

Bright Annealing

Because of the potential for oxidation, bright annealing requires high purity nitrogen when the oven temperature is over 1,500° F, however, the greatest volume of N2 is needed during the cooling phase. As the temperature drops, the percentage of O2 in the product stream can go up without any oxidation to the product. To this end, our proprietary purity selector switch/purity exchange valve is a perfect fit for annealing. The N2 system can be tuned down to deliver very high purity N2 as well. As the temperature goes down during the cooling process, the PFX valve can be adjusted to a different purity. Regardless of how it’s done, the annealing process is perfectly mated with PSA N2.

Cable Splice Drying

For years, phone and cable companies have been using our proprietary compressed air splice and switch dryer. Now, with the advent of 12- and 24-volt high-efficiency compressors, our no-moving-parts splice dryers can operate on virtually any power available. OEMs, cable service and optic-fiber companies can be free of bulky N2 cylinders forever. For over 100 years, coal mine fires have been an economic and ecological nightmare. Some active fires cost coal companies up to $2 million per day. Disaster Management

From a medical standpoint, almost all scenarios involving the breakdown of infrastructure means that cryogenic oxygen can no longer be delivered. In other cases, transporting sufficient O2 to triage, stabilize, hold, and even perform surgery is a serious logistical issue. Fruit Orchards / Storage

Glove Boxes

Gold Mining

On Site systems are operating now in some of the world’s most remote mines. Regardless of the altitude, climate, or conditions, our systems are increasing gold yield at a rate that pays for the system in a matter of months. By using oxygen to convert mineral sulfides to sulfates and processing them, gold yield can be more than doubled over standard ore gravity separation and concentration. By sparging 94-95% oxygen into a thickened flotation concentrate (which has been heated under pressure) an oxidized slurry results. Not only are U.S. sulphides converted to U.S. sulphates by the O2, but arsenic is converted to ferric arsenate. After neutralizing the oxidized slurry with lime, the slurry can be leached, and gold-bearing solutions recovered and filtered to create the additional yield. The volume of O2 required for the process dictates that the facility have easy access to either cryogenically produced, bulk liquid oxygen, or have the ability to produce its own oxygen. Even if cryogenic O2 is available from a reasonable distance, access for a bulk liquid carrier to the facility is usually a major issue. PSA produced O2 lends itself perfectly to such an application.

Grain Elevator Explosion Prevention

Nitrogen is used to inert grain silos and grain elevators, eliminating explosions in dust-filled atmospheres. Grain dust in these environments is very hazardous, and in an oxygen-rich environment, a spark could cause the dust to ignite.

Heat Treating

Kilns and furnaces used for heat treating may be under pressure; that classifies them as autoclaves that require a greater volume of N2. Kilns and furnaces may also be used as a melting device. All of these processes have one enemy – oxygen. O2 discolors the product, and can dangerously weaken it. Any metal over 600° F will oxidize in the presence of O2. The purity for most metal applications is at most 99.99%; pressure 30-100 PSIG. Most are purge and fill applications that can be accommodated with larger or multiple N2 surge tanks instead of pressure-boosting compressors.

Jewelry Manufacturing

Military Medical Oxygen

These FDA approved, CE certified, modular systems are rugged but lightweight and portable. Our POGS produces 33 LPM of 93% O2 at 50 PSIG and 30 LPM of medical grade air, and fills high pressure cylinders to 2200 PSIG. POGS can be located 30 feet from the compressor and 60 feet from the power source. The entire system is completely modular and can be oriented in parallel or series. Mine Seal Inerting

On October 20, 2008, MSHA issued the Final Rule for submitting a mine seal design for approval.  The Final Rule focuses on the strength, construction, maintenance, and repair of mine seals and also includes requirements for sampling and controlling the atmospheres behind seals. Under the Final Rule if a mine operator monitors and maintains the atmosphere of the sealed area as inert, seals must be designed to withstand 50 psi overpressure. Pharmaceuticals

Most pharmaceutical companies have multiple nitrogen uses and purity demands. Several hundred POGS have been deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan, used by FEMA, Homeland Security, and several states for disaster relief and emergency preparedness.  They allow you to produce oxygen to be used as a direct feed to an application, or to fill cylinders up to 2200 PSIG. Printing

On Site systems are providing high-speed printers with nitrogen for drying, and to prevent oxygen contamination for film production and separation. Purity needs vary depending on the process. Refineries

Nitrogen is used to inert storage or process tanks as well as move product through pipelines at refineries. The purpose of nitrogen is to prevent hazardous or explosive environments, or because of the adverse effect oxygen has on certain chemicals. On Site has a nitrogen generating system - a PSA application such as the one pictured here, or membrane applications -  that can work for either situation.

Semi-Conductors

For years, component level manufacturers and semi-conductor producers have been using nitrogen inertion. Whether in the fabrication of stacked dies, rework, or component solder bumping, N2 allows for a larger process window in the safety of minimal oxygen. With the advent of mandated lead-free soldering, the critical issues of flux chemistry aggressiveness have again been raised. When this aspect of process control is coupled with the smaller Delta T temperature window, N2 inerting boosts production success.

Controlled nitrogen atmospheres in reflow, wave, selective, and rework applications give engineers a larger process arena to work in. Nitrogen also helps during the liquidous state while the solder is completing surface wetting for a good bond. We began testing PSA N2 generation with reflow and found that purity levels required for reflow, wave and selective soldering range from 99.5% to 99.99%.

Shipboard Inerting

Before membrane technology, shipboard use of nitrogen for inerting propulsion, and bulk cargo combustibles, was dominated by combustion-based inert gas generators. On Site's expertise in offshore N2 production and explosive and/or corrosive environments can ease the burden of design and build for shipbuilders, engineering firms and ship owners. Sintering

Nitrogen is used to inert the sintering process. (Sintering is the process of melting and compressing metal into molds).  Oxygen (which causes rust) is removed from the environment by introducing nitrogen into the process. Inerting with nitrogen during the sintering process eliminates the effects of oxidation, thereby improving quality while reducing cost.

SMT (Surface Mount Technologies)

High purity nitrogen is required in many solder applications and provides several benefits. It reduces the dross on the solder pots. It also reduces the surface tension, allowing the solder to break away from the solder site more cleanly. Steel Cutting

We can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars over bulk N2. A lean, efficient process has become vital to the success of laser cutting operations. Nothing can provide you with more cost savings than generating your own N2. Surgical Tool Driving

We use nitrogen to drive medical air tools because the gas is so dry it prevents tools from oxidizing — and makes them last 3-4 times longer. The most technical version of N2 pressure driving occurs in the operating room. On Site Gas has developed an entire line of specialty generators that produce surgical, tool-driving medical grade USP 99% nitrogen at up to 180 PSIG using only oil-free compressors. Vertical Form Fill Machines

Veterinarians
