Cryogenic vs. On Site Gas Generation

There are plenty of not-so-subtle differences

Many of our customers use an On Site Gas system to supplement or replace their cryo systems. When comparing cryogenic gas vs. self-generated systems, consider the following points:

  • Cryo companies require a 5-, 7-, 10- or 12-year contract. The average is 7 years, a long-term commitment that is very difficult to shed.

  • Since nitrogen boils at -320°F, the N2 in a bulk liquid tank is always boiling. If the tank stands unused, the vapors from the boil-off may vent into the atmosphere. If not recaptured, this could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars in lost gas.

  • Cryo gas is charged per CCF (hundred cubic feet). The average cost per CCF of self-generated gas is one-third to one-half the cost of cryo.

  • The cryo cost per CCF, however is only part of the cost. Add in delivery fees, monthly tank rental fees, fuel charges, electric charges, Hazmat fees, plus local and/or state taxes. These additional charges can nearly double the actual cost.

  • Cryo tank installations are also expensive, and require a concrete pad to be poured, at your expense.

  • Cryo tanks require fencing enclosures, also at your expense.

  • You must also provide an area capable of delivery truck back up.

  • In most liquid tank installations, you rent - versus own - the tank. Over the course of the contract, you will pay for this more than once.

  • If you run out of liquid, the only obligation the gas company has is to fill the tank on the next delivery, free.

  • If you decide to discontinue using liquid, you may be required to give the gas company a written notice one year prior to the end of the contract.

Smaller bulk tanks can offer a benefit when partnered with an On Site gas generating system.
