Oxygen Generator

The Benefits of Oxygen Generators for Gold and Silver Mining Operations

Oxygen generators play an essential role in modern precious metal extraction, significantly enhancing process efficiency, metal recovery rates, and operational safety in gold and silver mining operations. In hydrometallurgical processing, particularly cyanidation, dissolved oxygen is a critical reagent required to oxidize precious metals and enable their dissolution into solution. Maintaining optimal oxygen levels throughout leaching circuits is vital to maximizing throughput, lowering chemical consumption, and driving profitability.

Industrial oxygen gas accelerates leach kinetics, reduces cyanide consumption, and supports auxiliary operations such as wastewater treatment and environmental compliance. For mining facilities operating in remote locations, relying entirely on delivered liquid oxygen (LOX) or high-pressure cylinders creates complex supply chain logistics and recurring transportation costs.

At On Site Gas Systems, we design and manufacture custom industrial oxygen generation systems specifically engineered for demanding mining applications. Here is how on-site oxygen generators work, the key operational benefits they provide to gold and silver mines, and why more mining operations are transitioning to on-site gas generation.

Why Is Oxygen Used in Gold and Silver Mining?

The extraction of gold and silver from ore predominantly relies on the cyanidation process (also known as cyanide leaching). In this process, finely ground ore is treated with a diluted cyanide solution to dissolve gold and silver into a soluble complex.

The chemical dissolution of gold in cyanide solution is governed by Elsner’s Equation:

4 Au + 8 NaCN + O2 + 2 H2O → 4 NaAu(CN)2 + 4 NaOH

As demonstrated by the stoichiometry, oxygen is a necessary reactant alongside cyanide. Without sufficient dissolved oxygen in the slurry, the dissolution reaction slows down drastically or comes to a complete halt, regardless of the amount of cyanide present.

Oxygen is used across several core areas in gold and silver processing:

  • Pre-Oxidation: Oxygen is injected prior to cyanidation to oxidize interfering sulfide minerals (such as pyrite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite) that would otherwise consume excessive cyanide and oxygen during leaching.
  • Tank & Heap Leaching: Supplying high-purity oxygen directly into agitator leach tanks or heap leach pads maintains high dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, accelerating leach kinetics.
  • CIL and CIP Circuits: Supporting Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) and Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) processing circuits to sustain maximum gold adsorption rates.
  • Cyanide Destruction & Effluent Treatment: Utilizing oxygen in SO2/Air or ozone-based destruction processes to neutralize toxic cyanide in tailing ponds and comply with environmental regulations.

1. Accelerates Leaching Kinetics and Boosts Metal Recovery

The primary benefit of integrating high-purity oxygen into gold and silver processing is the dramatic reduction in leaching residence time and the corresponding increase in overall metal recovery.

When atmospheric air (which contains only ~21% oxygen) is sparged into leach tanks, achieving target dissolved oxygen concentrations above 8 to 10 ppm is challenging, especially at elevated slurry temperatures or high altitudes. By sparging high-purity oxygen (90% to 95% O2) from an on-site oxygen generator, miners can easily achieve dissolved oxygen levels exceeding 20 to 30 ppm.

Key processing advantages include:

  • Faster Dissolution Rates: Higher DO levels accelerate the rate at which gold and silver dissolve into the cyanide solution.
  • Reduced Residence Time: Processing cycles that once required 24 to 48 hours can often be completed in a fraction of the time, allowing higher ore throughput through existing tank infrastructure.
  • Improved Overall Yield: Higher DO concentrations help unlock refractoriness caused by sulfide coatings, exposing more gold and silver particles for extraction.

2. Reduces Sodium Cyanide Consumption

Sodium cyanide (NaCN) is one of the most significant recurring chemical costs in gold and silver processing. In many ores, “cyanicide” minerals such as reactive copper, iron sulfides, and arsenic compounds compete with precious metals to react with cyanide.

Applying high-purity oxygen during a dedicated pre-oxidation stage oxidizes these reactive sulfide minerals before cyanide is added to the circuit. Once passivated, these minerals no longer consume cyanide, leaving more active cyanide available to selectively dissolve gold and silver.

Additionally, because oxygen accelerates the leaching kinetics, lower baseline concentrations of cyanide are required in the leach tanks to achieve high dissolution rates. For high-capacity mining operations, reducing sodium cyanide consumption by even 15% to 30% yields substantial annual cost savings while reducing overall chemical hazards on site.

3. Reduces Dependence on Liquid Oxygen Deliveries

Gold and silver mines are frequently located in remote, rugged regions with limited infrastructure, severe weather conditions, and challenging access roads. Relying on continuous bulk liquid oxygen (LOX) deliveries via cryogenic tankers presents significant operational risks.

Delivered liquid oxygen is subject to road closures, severe weather, and transit delays, while incurring high ongoing transportation, freight, and fuel surcharge fees. Furthermore, cryogenic tanks suffer continuous boil-off losses during storage and expose operators to long-term supplier contracts and price spikes.

An on-site pressure swing adsorption (PSA) or vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) oxygen generator produces high-purity oxygen gas directly from compressed atmospheric air. This ensures a continuous, on-demand gas supply without reliance on external delivery logistics, freight costs, or storage boil-off losses.

4. Lowers Long-Term Operating Costs

While delivered bulk oxygen involves continuous purchasing expenses, freight surcharges, and equipment rental fees, producing oxygen on-site allows mine operators to convert an unpredictable variable expense into a controllable, low fixed operating cost.

The operational economics of an on-site oxygen system are primarily dictated by electricity consumption for the air compressor. In most mining operations, the payback period for an on-site generator ranges between 12 and 24 months, after which the cost per unit of oxygen generated drops significantly compared to delivered gas.

5. Supports Cyanide Destruction and Environmental Compliance

Environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance are essential components of modern mining operations. Before tailing slurry can be safely discharged into tailings storage facilities (TSFs), residual cyanide must be destroyed to meet stringent safety levels set by regulatory authorities and international mining standards (such as the International Cyanide Management Code).

Oxygen plays a crucial role in several commercial cyanide destruction techniques, including:

  • SO2/Air (INCO) Process: Oxygen is used to rapidly oxidize free and weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide into cyanate (OCN-).
  • Ozonation Systems: On-site oxygen generators supply feed gas to ozone generators, producing high-concentration ozone for advanced oxidation of refractory compounds and organic contaminants.
  • Biological Treatment: Supplying oxygen to aerobic bioreactors that biologically degrade residual nitrogen compounds and thiocyanates in mine effluents.

How On-Site PSA Oxygen Generators Work

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is the leading technology used to generate industrial oxygen on site at mine locations.

The process follows a clean, mechanical separation cycle:

  • Step 1: Air Compression & Purification: Ambient atmospheric air is drawn in by a heavy-duty air compressor, filtered to remove particulates, and conditioned through dryers and oil-coalescing filters.
  • Step 2: Nitrogen Adsorption: The clean, dry compressed air enters a vessel containing Synthetic Zeolite Molecular Sieve (ZMS). The ZMS material preferentially adsorbs nitrogen and water vapor molecules under pressure while allowing oxygen to pass through as a high-purity gas (typically 90% to 95% purity).
  • Step 3: Oxygen Storage & Delivery: High-purity oxygen is stored in an oxygen buffer vessel and regulated to the required pressure and flow rate before being piped directly to leach tanks, pre-oxidation vessels, or effluent treatment units.
  • Step 4: Regenerative Desorption: When the ZMS bed becomes saturated with nitrogen, pressure is released to depressurize the vessel, venting the adsorbed nitrogen back to the atmosphere and regenerating the sieve for the next cycle. Dual-bed systems alternate continuously to maintain an uninterrupted supply of oxygen.

Choosing the Right Oxygen Generator for Mining Applications

Selecting an optimal oxygen generator for a gold or silver mine requires evaluating specific site conditions and metallurgy. Key technical considerations include:

  • Altitude and Ambient Conditions: Because atmospheric density decreases at high elevations, air compressors and oxygen generators must be sized properly to account for site elevation and ambient temperature swings.
  • Oxygen Flow Rate & Purity: Calculating total daily tonnage of ore processed, sulfide concentration, and target DO levels determines the required Nm³/h or SCFH oxygen flow rate. Most leaching applications operate effectively at 90% to 93% O2 purity.
  • Operating Pressure: Matching the delivery pressure required for deep leach tanks, sparging systems, or high-pressure autoclaves.
  • System Containerization: Mine sites benefit from containerized or skid-mounted oxygen generation systems that arrive pre-wired and pre-piped for fast plug-and-play installation in rugged environments.
