PSA Nitrogen generation is a cost-effective alternative to delivered gas

On Site's PSA nitrogen generator technology assures quick returns on your investment and stable year-to-year gas costs.

How PSA Nitrogen Generation Works

Ad-sorption is the physical process of separating molecules. Our Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) systems generate nitrogen, by separating it from the oxygen in ordinary air.

A vessel containing carbon molecular sieve, or CMS, is filled with compressed air. The smaller oxygen molecules are adsorbed by the sieve material while the larger nitrogen molecules drift past and are collected in a nitrogen receiver.

Pressure is then released from the vessel, and the oxygen molecules are vented to the atmosphere. At the same time, the cycle is repeated in a second vessel to provide a flow of gas into the nitrogen receiver.

PSA Nitrogen Generators

On Site Gas has over 30 years of experience designing and manufacturing gas-generating systems that can replace or supplement your current means of nitrogen delivery. In fact, as a leader in nitrogen generation, we pioneered the development of the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) method and have since had a hand in every step of its perfection and ongoing advances. If you need nitrogen for medical or industrial applications, a Pressure Swing Adsorption nitrogen generator is likely what you’re looking for.

What is Pressure Swing Adsorption?

In general, adsorption is the physical process of separating molecules. PSA technology involves the separation of specific types of gas (such as nitrogen) from atmospheric air through the use of pressure.

The process works by increasing the pressure within the generator, which causes the gas molecules to adsorb. The PSA system then passes the air through a vessel that contains a carefully chosen material that attracts the targeted gas. The targeted molecules stay in the vessel, separating them from the remaining air that is emitted into the rest of the system. When the generator’s vessel reaches its adsorption capacity, the system reduces the pressure, releasing the pure gas.

How PSA Nitrogen Generation Works

Our Pressure Swing Adsorption systems generate nitrogen by separating it from the atmospheric air. In this case, carbon is the preferred adsorptive material, allowing the nitrogen molecules to pass through while blocking the remaining gases from leaving the vessel.

To create nitrogen on-demand, a vessel containing a carbon molecular sieve (CMS) is filled with compressed air. The sieve adsorbs the oxygen molecules, while the nitrogen molecules are able to drift into a receiver. Pressure is then released from the vessel, and the oxygen is vented back into the atmosphere. The cycle is then repeated in another vessel to provide a constant flow of gas. That way, the nitrogen receiver is quickly and safely filled with the desired gas, ready for industrial use.

Why Choose PSA Nitrogen Generation?

PSA technology is the preferred method of nitrogen delivery for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Cost Savings – PSA nitrogen generation is a budget-friendly alternative to traditional delivery methods. In fact, PSA nitrogen generator costs are significantly lower than other delivery methods, such as liquid supply and cylinder rentals. Plus, you’ll have continuous access to your own steady supply of gas with no need for a delivery contract.
  • Energy-Saving Technology – PSA nitrogen generators employ two different energy-saving tactics. First, the system will go into standby mode when no gas is being used. The generator also monitors pressure continuously to ensure generation is matched to your nitrogen demand.
  • Safety – PSA nitrogen generators are much safer than bulky, high-pressure cylinders. Additionally, because you can keep the entire system at room temperature, you can eliminate the need for potentially hazardous cryogenic liquids.
  • Versatility – Our PSA nitrogen generators are highly versatile and can be used for several applications across all industries. For example, these systems are ideal for reducing oxidation and preventing fires in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. They can also be used for industrial cleaning, pipeline testing, and so much more.
