How PSA Nitrogen Generation Works
Ad-sorption is the physical process of separating molecules. Our Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) systems generate nitrogen, by separating it from the oxygen in ordinary air.
A vessel containing carbon molecular sieve, or CMS, is filled with compressed air. The smaller oxygen molecules are adsorbed by the sieve material while the larger nitrogen molecules drift past and are collected in a nitrogen receiver.
Pressure is then released from the vessel, and the oxygen molecules are vented to the atmosphere. At the same time, the cycle is repeated in a second vessel to provide a flow of gas into the nitrogen receiver.

What is Pressure Swing Adsorption?
In general, adsorption is the physical process of separating molecules. PSA technology involves the separation of specific types of gas (such as nitrogen) from atmospheric air through the use of pressure.
The process works by increasing the pressure within the generator, which causes the gas molecules to adsorb. The PSA system then passes the air through a vessel that contains a carefully chosen material that attracts the targeted gas. The targeted molecules stay in the vessel, separating them from the remaining air that is emitted into the rest of the system. When the generator’s vessel reaches its adsorption capacity, the system reduces the pressure, releasing the pure gas.
How PSA Nitrogen Generation Works
