On-site Nitrogen Generators Improve Electronics Manufacturing

Nitrogren Gas in Electronics Manufacturing

In today’s world of electronics manufacturing, it’s all about using surface mount technology. Not only are these devices safer and easier to produce than their leaded predecessors, they also perform better—as long as they are created under the right conditions. That’s where nitrogen gas generators from On Site Gas Systems comes in.

Why Nitrogen Gas for Electronics Manufacturing?

It’s no secret that the manufacturing of electronics is complex, and the process requires precision—there is no room for error. Nitrogen gas works to ensure this perfection is achieved in three ways:

  • Maintains the Ideal Atmosphere – Electronics manufacturing calls for a very specific temperature and environment to work successfully. With nitrogen gas, both can be achieved and sustained throughout the entire workday.
  • Produces Crisper Results – Pure nitrogen gas is also required in electronics manufacturing to ensure sharp finishes. It cuts down on the amount of dross that is formed in the soldering process, while also reducing surface tension to allow the solder to cleanly break away.
  • Prevents Oxidation – In convection reflow and selective soldering, nitrogen gas is crucial in order to eliminate the oxygen from the air, otherwise oxidation can occur, which weakens the solder. With nitrogen gas, the amount of oxygen is greatly reduced so the integrity of the solder can remain intact.

Why an On-site Nitrogen Generator?

The need for nitrogen gas in electronics manufacturing is clear, and when you break it down, so is the need for an on-site nitrogen generator from On Site Gas Systems. Here’s why:

  • Eliminates Dependency – When electronics manufacturers need nitrogen gas, they oftentimes rely on the delivery of nitrogen gas. However, this causes them to be dependent on someone else for their supply, and it usually requires a contract. With an on-site nitrogen gas generator from On Site Gas Systems, electronics manufacturing companies are able to produce their own nitrogen gas supply. This means they will always have it available when they need it and they don’t have to worry about the logistics of getting nitrogen gas cylinders or N2 bottles
  • An On-Site N2 Generator Reduces Expenses – It is true that there is an upfront cost to get an on-site nitrogen generator from On Site Gas Systems, but even the Surface Mount Technology Association believes that it is well worth it. Since the nitrogen gas improves the quality of the electronics manufacturing tenfold, there are fewer repairs needed. You can further increase your saving by generating your Nitrogen On Site and On Demand. After a short time, the on-site nitrogen generator will pay for itself by greatly reducing the amount spent for your nitrogen needs.

An on-site nitrogen gas generator from On Site Gas Systems is ideal for use in electronics manufacturing. Not only does it improve the quality of the product and the efficiency of the facility, it also eliminates the need for nitrogen gas deliveries.

How NAPP Put a Nitrogen Generator to Work to Increase Their Productivity and Profitability

How NAPP Put a Nitrogen Generator to Work to Increase Their Productivity and ProfitabilityOftentimes, you don’t realize the value in something until you experience it for yourself. That is why we created our demo program, which allows companies to test out our nitrogen generators before fully investing in them.
Recently, Natural American Pet Products (which has since been acquired by Dogswell), a premier pet food packager in the United States, embarked on their path to nitrogen gas freedom by giving our nitrogen generator demo program a try.
Here’s their story…

NAPP’s Experience with a Nitrogen Generator

Natural American Pet Products (NAPP) was curious to test the ROI of an On Site Gas nitrogen generator at their pet food plant. Shortly after our first contact, we installed a nitrogen generator on-site at their Missouri facility. The rest is history.

  • Within 30 days of the demo nitrogen generator being delivered, NAPP purchased the unit outright.
  • Within 60 days of installing the nitrogen generator, NAPP sent back all of their nitrogen gas cylinders and LN2 dewars (and they don’t miss all the logistics that go along with them).
  • After five months, they had recouped all of the costs of the nitrogen generator.

Their Missouri facility now produces all of their nitrogen gas on-site using our nitrogen generator.

How a Nitrogen Generator Can Work for You

It’s easy to see why NAPP converted to solely using a nitrogen generator for their nitrogen gas needs. They were able to produce their own nitrogen gas when their production demanded it, and they didn’t have to deal with the deliveries and storage of nitrogen gas cylinders. This had a profound impact on their productivity.
Additionally, an on-site nitrogen generator allowed them to increase their profits drastically. Instead of the ongoing costs associated with nitrogen gas cylinders, they were able to pay for the nitrogen generator outright after five short months. Now, they have minimal overhead expenses for their nitrogen supply, and little-to-no maintenance to worry about.
If you are ready to see how a nitrogen generator can help your company flourish, contact On Site Gas Systems today. We would love to discuss our demo program with you to help your company become more efficient and profitable.

How PSA Nitrogen Generators Work

Nitrogen mHow PSA Nitrogen Generators Workakes up 79% of the air we breathe, so there is an unlimited source right at your fingertips waiting to be tapped to save you 80% to 90% of your current annual nitrogen costs. A Pressure Swing Adsorption Nitrogen Generator simply separates the nitrogen molecules out of your compressed air stream to a usable purity, flow and pressure, based on your required specification. Unlike other nitrogen separation technologies, PSA nitrogen generators give you the ability to achieve extremely high purities to 99.9995% or 5 PPM. The PSA process is a physical process and uses no chemicals, therefore the annual consumables costs are extremely low. PSA nitrogen generators also put very little strain on the equipment and filter media so units often last 20+ years with very little maintenance costs. It is not uncommon for a PSA nitrogen generator to exceed 40,000 hours of service.

PSA Nitrogen Generator Purity Requirements and ROI

When developing your specification for a nitrogen generator, it is important to understand that the size and cost of the equipment is mainly based on the purity and flow rate required. With PSA generators, it is key to identify your maximum peak flow requirement at any given point during your operation. It is also important to identify the minimum purity that you require to maximize your savings potential. Most applications do not require the “one size fits all” purity supplied by your gas company. For example, many food-packaging applications require 99.5% purity. 99.5% is considered a low purity for PSA generation leading to extremely low cost equipment and very efficient compressed air to Nitrogen ratios. There are many applications where high purities of 99.999%+ offer tremendous savings as well.

Liquid Dewars Versus PSA Nitrogen Generators

Many of our electronics and lab customers are not candidates for bulk cryogenic tanks based on volume so they are forced to use expensive liquid nitrogen dewars. In most cases, liquid nitrogen dewars are roughly 50% more expensive than PSA generators. There are also many inherent dangers in using liquid dewars that just don’t exist when using a PSA generator. With a PSA nitrogen generator there are no deliveries, no rolling heavy wheeled pressurized canisters through the plant and no venting and boil off your product.
Please contact On Site Gas Systems to discuss your flow requirement, your purity requirement and your pressure requirement. We will then work with you to design a nitrogen generation system to maximize your savings potential. We will also provide you with a Return on Investment profile that will outline the “real” savings achieved using our Pressure Swing Adsorption technology.
